What We Do
Common Heating Problems We Fix in The Woodlands
A heating system rarely fails in the middle of winter. It fails on the first cold morning after months of sitting idle. Our Northwest Houston technicians work across The Woodlands, repairing furnaces, heat pumps and the backup heat strips many local homes rely on: igniters and flame sensors, blower motors, capacitors, thermostats, limit switches, defrost controls, refrigerant leaks and airflow problems. Every visit starts with a clear diagnosis and an upfront price before we begin — no surprises, no pressure.
Same-day appointments may be available in The Woodlands depending on service type and current scheduling demand.
Won’t turn on after months off
One of the most common heating calls on the first cold morning. A system that sat idle since spring can have a failed igniter, a dirty flame sensor, or a tripped safety switch. Usually a single part, and worth checking before anyone talks about replacement.
Burning smell the first time it runs
A short, dusty smell on the first run of the season is normal: dust settled on the heat exchanger or heat strips is burning off. A smell that lingers, or smells electrical, is not. Shut it off and call us.
Blowing air, but it isn’t warm
On a furnace this often points to an ignition or gas-valve problem. On a heat pump it can be low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, or backup heat that never kicks in. Different fixes with different prices, so the diagnosis comes first.
Heat pump iced over or running constantly
Some frost on a heat pump in cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it. A unit that stays encased in ice, or never shuts off, usually has a defrost-control or airflow problem.
Short cycling — on, off, on again
A heater that keeps starting and stopping is often overheating and shutting itself down on purpose. A clogged filter is the first suspect; a failing limit switch or blower is the next.
Some rooms stay cold
In most Woodlands homes the ductwork runs through the attic. Leaks and disconnected runs there cost you heat exactly where you can’t see it. That’s a duct problem, not a thermostat problem.

Serving The Woodlands and Surrounding Villages
Heating in The Woodlands is a different job than it is up north, for two reasons. The first is idle time. A Woodlands heating system can go eight or nine months without running, then get asked to work hard on the first cold morning. Parts that sat all summer in a hot attic — igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, the blower motor — tend to fail on the first start, not halfway through winter. That’s why the first cold front of the year is one of the busiest heating days we have. The second is the kind of system. Many Woodlands homes heat with a heat pump, which moves heat instead of making it, with electric heat strips as backup for the coldest nights. Others have a furnace paired with their AC. The two fail in different ways, so the first thing our technician does is tell you which one you have and what that means for the repair. Neighborhood age helps too: in the older villages like Grogan’s Mill and Panther Creek, many homes are on their second or third system, while newer areas like Sterling Ridge and Creekside Park are reaching the age where original equipment starts needing real repairs.

Common Questions
Common Questions from The Woodlands
These are some of the questions Woodlands homeowners ask before scheduling heating service with Malek.
Have Another Question? →01 Do you repair both furnaces and heat pumps in The Woodlands?
Yes. Our Northwest Houston technicians repair both, along with the backup heat strips that many Woodlands heat pumps rely on. If you’re not sure which system you have, we’ll tell you on the visit.
02 What does heating repair cost in The Woodlands?
Our $89 Heating Inspection is a straightforward place to start: we evaluate the system’s condition and operation, check common performance concerns, and explain what we found. Any repair is priced before work begins.
03 Why won’t my heater turn on after the summer?
Usually because a part that sat idle for months failed on the first start. Igniters, flame sensors and safety switches are the common ones on a furnace; a capacitor or defrost control on a heat pump. Check that the thermostat is set to heat and the filter is clean, then give us a call.
04 Is it normal for my heat pump to have frost on it?
A light frost in cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it on its own. A unit that stays covered in ice, or never shuts off, is not normal and usually means a defrost or airflow problem.
05 Should I repair or replace my heating system?
It depends on the failure and the age. An igniter or flame sensor on a twelve-year-old furnace is an easy repair. A cracked heat exchanger or failed compressor on that same system is a real decision, and we’ll lay out both options rather than push one.
06 Are your technicians licensed and insured?
Every Malek technician is licensed and insured (HVAC: TACLA9262C), and our service work is backed by a 30-day labor guarantee. Installs carry longer coverage — up to 10 years on parts and labor.
